Transdisciplinary Early Intervention for Children with Developmental Delays & Disabilities from birth to 3 years of age
This 3-day workshop for ASSA’s physiotherapists (PTs – 29) & Occupational Therapists (OTs – 2) was held on January 25th to 27th, 2023 covered the best approaches to early intervention involve transdisciplinary strategies to optimize child’s gross motor, fine motor & ADL, speech, & cognitive needs.
The objective of this workshop was to identify developmental delay at earlier stage, to learn about best practices in early intervention and to promote the transdisciplinary approach of the rehab team in working with children with developmental disabilities.
Trainers & Topics:
Marie Brien PT, MSc, our Associate Director of Research and Capacity Building presented on the transdisciplinary approach to early intervention with children with disabilities, play-based interventions in the home environment, facilitating motor skills throughout the developmental sequence, and treatment of children with cerebral palsy and other motor conditions.
Franzina Coutinho OT, PhD, our Director of Research, presented on persistent primitive reflexes and their impact on development, facilitating hand function, and on identifying sensory issues among young children and sensory integration.
Selvakumar SLP (Speech & Language Pathologist) & M.Sc – Audiologist and Vasanthi PT, Asst. Coordinator EI TTS2 presented on feeding difficulties in the younger children and its management, positioning and postural correction for feeding difficulties. The session was about addressing & assessing swallowing, feeding difficulties among young children and the practical session addressed positioning and postural correction of children with feeding difficulties.
Divya Prabha PT & Maheswaran PT presented on identification of development delay in all domains. They covered about child developmental stages such as gross motor, fine motor, cognition & types and stages of play from age 0-3 years.
