Empowering Lives: The Journey of ADAPT NGO, Mumbai

In the bustling city of Mumbai, amidst the vibrant culture and dynamic lifestyle, lies an organization that has been a beacon of hope and empowerment for individuals with disabilities. ADAPT (Able Disabled All People Together), formerly known as The Spastics Society of India, has been transforming lives since its inception in 1972.

A Visionary Beginning

ADAPT was founded by Dr. Mithu Alur, a visionary who recognized the dire need for specialized education and therapy for children with cerebral palsy and other neuro-muscular and developmental disabilities. The journey began with a small school in Colaba, Mumbai, catering to just three children. Over the years, this humble initiative has grown into a comprehensive network of services that support over 3,000 children and 10,000 families annually1.

Comprehensive Services

ADAPT offers a wide range of services designed to address the diverse needs of individuals with disabilities. These include:

  • Assessment and Therapy: Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial. ADAPT provides comprehensive assessment and therapy services to help children reach their full potential.
  • Inclusive Education: ADAPT champions inclusive education, integrating children with disabilities into mainstream schools. This approach not only benefits the children but also fosters a more inclusive society.
  • Vocational Training and Employment: Recognizing the importance of economic independence, ADAPT offers vocational training and job placement services. This empowers young adults with disabilities to lead self-sufficient lives.
  • Support Services: From counselling to home management programs, ADAPT ensures that families receive the support they need to care for their loved ones.

Advocacy and Awareness

Beyond direct services, ADAPT is a strong advocate for the rights of individuals with disabilities. The organization works tirelessly to raise awareness and influence policy changes that promote inclusion and accessibility. Their efforts have led to the formation of independent spastic societies in 16 states across India.

A Legacy of Inclusion

ADAPT’s impact extends beyond Mumbai. The organization has established the National Resource Centre for Inclusion (NRCI) in Mumbai, which focuses on integrating disabled children from special schools into regular schools. This initiative has set a precedent for inclusive education in India.

Looking Ahead

As ADAPT continues to grow, its mission remains steadfast: to create a society where individuals with disabilities are valued, included, and empowered. The organization’s journey is a testament to the power of dedication, compassion, and community support.

In a world that often overlooks the needs of the differently-abled, ADAPT stands as a shining example of what can be achieved when we come together to support and uplift each other. Their work is not just about providing services; it’s about changing mind sets and building a more inclusive future for all.

Enabling Inclusion® App:

ADAPT NGO is integrating the Enabling Inclusion® App from Amar Seva Sangam to enhance the monitoring of their activities and track children’s progress more effectively, thereby improving the overall quality of their services. To ensure the staff is well-versed in using the app, online training sessions were conducted on July 15th, 16th, 18th, and 22nd. A total of 26 staff members from ADAPT participated in these sessions, including 3 management personnel, 6 physiotherapists, 2 speech therapists, 3 psychologists, 7 special educators, 2 community rehabilitation workers (CRWs), 2 IT professionals, and 1 administrative staff member. This comprehensive training aimed to equip the team with the necessary skills to utilize the app efficiently.
